Seeing the Earth from Space: Maps & Satellite Data Workshop
Özyeğin University is pleased to invite students to a specialized workshop titled “Seeing the Earth from Space: Maps & Satellite Data Workshop,” organized within the scope of the UDENE Project (Urban Development Explorations using Natural Experiments).
The workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of spatial data interpretation using Copernicus Earth Observation (EO) imagery, with a focus on understanding environmental and urban changes through accessible analytical techniques.
This hands-on session is designed for beginner-level participants from any academic field and aims to build foundational competencies in reading maps, exploring satellite imagery, and conducting simple EO-based data experiments. Through guided exercises, students will gain exposure to real-world Earth observation practices widely used in climate studies, sustainability assessments, environmental monitoring, and urban analysis.
In this workshop, participants will:
- Explore the basics of the EU Copernicus Earth Observation Programme
- Conduct simple data experiments to identify spatial patterns, land cover differences, and temporal changes
- Gain insights into how EO data supports scientific inquiry, policy analysis, and practical decision-making
A complementary brunch will be provided, including a free Nero latte, to support a relaxed learning environment and peer interaction.
Date: 11 December
Time: 10:00–12:00
Venue: ÖzU X-B27 Seminar Area
Quota: Limited to 30 students
Language: English
UDENE (Urban Development Explorations Using Natural Experiments) is an EU-supported educational initiative enabling students to engage with satellite data, applied spatial reasoning, and simplified natural experiments to better understand real-world urban and environmental change. The project encourages data literacy, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning through accessible Earth observation tools and hands-on activities.
The workshop is implemented under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Ebru Tekin Bilbil, with academic and technical contributions from Derya Kantarcıgil and Fatih Bostan.
